My Economic Plan

This is the beginning to a long conversation that I hope to engage in with the voters of Colorado’s Fourth District.  In the coming years, we face significant challenges with the economy and specifically with many of the issues that drive voters’ concerns about the economy – healthcare, renewable energy, the ongoing cost of the War in Iraq, and our burgeoning federal deficit.  As we come closer to the election, I plan to address those concerns individually and at greater length.

People Dedicated to change.

There are an amazing number of people that give significant portions of their time on a weekly or even daily basis to help effect change through the political process. Our offices are like Grand Central Station with volunteers coming by at all hours of the day either responding to calls for assistance on special projects or simply showing up asking how they can help. Volunteer team leaders help organize people into different areas and lots of different tasks and projects are going on simultaneously. The limited paid staff interact with volunteers and depend on their efforts to get many things done.

Top ten race in the country!

Last April the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee conducted a poll which among other things pointed out Congresswoman Musgrave’s vulnerability.  Fifty-nine percent of voters (59%) say they will vote for someone else or consider someone else.

Now the rest of the country is noticing the same thing and it is good news for us in the 4th CD…

The Washington Post just named this congressional race one of the top ten in the country most likely to switch parties in 2008.  Here is what they had to say about the race:

"I've been a Republican all my life but 'm fed up…”

I spent the last couple of days on the eastern plains of Colorado. My sister Barbara, who teaches high school in Virginia, came to Colorado this week to drive with me across the district. We started our trip last Saturday at the Bent County Fair Barbeque. Everyone we met was friendly and interested in learning more about my campaign. One gentleman told me "I've been a Republican all my life but 'm fed up. Next year I'm voting for Democrats, and you seem like a good person."

As compared to the Front Range there are very few 4th CD constituents on the eastern plains.   As a rule people are extremely friendly and ready to help you at a moments notice.

A party with John Magnie and members of the Subdudes!

This has been a fun week!

We have a goal of doing thirty house parties in thirty days starting in mid-August. We’ve started scheduling and organizing these in earnest and it looks like I’m going to have a crazy schedule. I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new folks, talking about the campaign, how we can win this seat and improve the 4th CD’s representation in Washington.

We can always use more help so if you are interested in hosting a party drop a note to Susan@markeyforcongress.com and one of our coordinators will get back in touch with you.
